Community Emergency Notifications

The Village of Mackinaw is part of the Tri-County BE ALERT Emergency Notification System. If there is an urgent community advisory or public safety emergency that requires your immediate attention, the BE ALERT Notification system will send that message directly to you via the communications route you specify. Some area schools also participate and can send notifications to parents if they opt-in for the special school alerts. To learn more and sign up, visit the Office of Emergency Management's website here

The Village of Mackinaw City Police Department would also like to encourage residents to visit www.smart911.com. A smart911 profile can provide valuable information to 911 and first responders in the event that you should have to call for emergency assistance.

OK 2 Say Logo

OK2SAY is a program designed to empower Michigan students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, and law enforcement to share and respond to student safety threats.

Criminal Activity Warning

Chief Woods would like to remind the residents of Mackinaw City of various telephone and e-mail scams which are becoming more common in our area. Many complaints from this activity involve residents who have been offered money. Many of these scams ask for financial information, including social security numbers, bank account numbers, and credit card information. Some scams may promise large amounts of money in exchange for a small processing or handling fee. The Mackinaw City Police Department asks that residents not give out personal or financial information over the telephone or via e-mail.

Many of these telemarketers gather this information for identity theft and to obtain money from accounts. If you think you may have doubts about your account you are asked to call your credit card company or bank to verify that no illegal activity has taken place.

Recently, there had been several complaints about someone calling and saying they are from Consumers Energy and they are on their way to shut the power off if you don’t pay it now.  They are directing the home owners and businesses to go to a Walgreens, Rite Aid, and CVS to obtain a green card to pay directly to this person. Consumers Energy has been notified and their fraud division is currently working on the situation. If you should receive phone calls like these please do not give out personal information. If you feel you may have been a victim please call Consumers Energy immediately. They can be reached at (800) 477-5050.

You can register your home, business, or cellular phone numbers at the National Do Not Call Registry at www.donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222.

CALL 911

In 1997 the Mackinaw City Police Department joined 911 dispatch services with 13 other police agencies in the counties of Cheboygan, Charlevoix, and Emmet. This created the CCE Central Dispatch Authority to better serve the needs of Northern Michigan.

All emergency services are dispatched from the CCE facility in Petoskey. This includes Police, Fire, and Ambulance service. To contact an officer 24 hours a day just dial 911.

Unlike other systems, 911 is also used as a NON-EMERGENCY number. There is ample staff to handle all emergency and non-emergency calls to 911 . Please use this number to contact our officers for any reason, at any time throughout the day and night.

If you are calling from out of the tri-County area please call the CCE Administrative number : (231) 439-3300

Child Passenger Safety Seat Inspections Available

The Mackinaw City Police Department is committed to keeping our children safe. Statistics show that 8 out of 10 child safety seats are not installed properly. More than 100,000 children age 12 and under are injured in motor vehicle collisions every year. Parents can reduce the risk to their children if they put them in an appropriate car safety seat that is correctly installed.

The Mackinaw City Police Department has advanced the safety of children riding in vehicles through our partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the National Child Passenger Safety Board and Safe Kids Worldwide.

Officer John House has recently become a certified child passenger safety technician.  Through this commitment, Officer House is available to inspect child safety seats, make recommendations if necessary, and provide replacement seats to qualified drivers.

If you would like to have your child safety seat inspected, please contact Officer House at 436-7861 and leave a message.  He will then contact you for a convenient time to meet.  This service is free of charge.  The inspection itself can last up to 2 hours if necessary and is conducted at the Mackinaw City Police Department

Prescription, Over-The-Counter Drug Drop Off

The Mackinaw City Police Department now has a drop-off box located inside village hall. This box provides residents with a way of safely and properly disposing of unwanted, expired, or unused medications.
